Area Advisor

About the position

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic * Area Advisor” to work on an internationally funded research project on small ruminant production and marketing in Punjab and Sindh. This role will involve undertaking field research on goat and sheep health and production to help to improve livelihoods of smallholder farming families in rural Punjab. The role involves working with an established team of young, dynamic veterinary researchers carrying applied, participatory research in collaboration with smallholder farmers and livestock value chain participants. Its aim is to describe the major constraints to goat and sheep production, health and marketing, and produce evidence-based recommendations and actions to help

overcome these constraints to improve smallholder farm productivity and livelihoods. The project is actively extending its results through the smart ruminant sector in Pakistan through direct contact with farmers and other sector stakeholders including government livestock departments, universities and non-government organisations.

The role is supervised by a project coordinator based in the office in Lahore, and will work closely with the existing Senior Area Advisor and Female Area Advisor based in Punjab, plus the Australian project leaders based in Melbourne, in a well-supported, collegian position. The position requires a practical working knowledge of small ruminant health and management. Key activities are:

  • With the wider field team, carrying out collaborative field research into goat and sheep production and health in vitlages in Sindh alongside, including data and sample collection covering:
  • Animal production measurements

Collecting animal samples to assess health status o Collecting livestock marketing

  • Information from farmers
  • Datarecording, entry, checking and summary
  • Conducting surveys and interviews with farming families and other livestock stakeholders, including value chain participants such as traders and service providers
  • With the support of the rest of the project team, helping respond to farmer enquiries about livestock health and production problems
  • Contributing to creation and delivery of farmer training and other extension activities that bring meaningful benefit to smart holder farmers through evidence-based improvements to their small ruminant farming
  • Helping contribute to project communications, including stakeholder reports and scientific publications

The position requires travel to project field sites, currently including Chakwat, Bhakkar and Rajanpur plus occasional trips to the project working areas in Sindh. livestock Project Farming Families Jobs

Essential

  • Anawarded degree in animal/veterinary sciences from a HEC recognized institute
  • Experience working with smallholder farmers, and goats and sheep in village farm settings
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a young, dynamic research team under limited direct supervision but with good technical support, whilst maintaining a positive collegiate working environment
  • Excellent practical skills using Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent communication skills in Urdu, Punjabi and English

Desirable

  • Previous research carrying out applied livestock research
  • Experience managing large datasets
  • Experience conducting farmer training or other farmer engagement activities
